Learning to Cook, Learning to Stay and Re-rooting
Third Culture Kid

Learning to Cook, Little by Little, in the U.S.
Living in the U.S., I’ve noticed that my cooking skills are improving day by day.
Since food delivery isn’t always an easy option, cooking has slowly become a necessity rather than a choice.
This time, I tried making Korean-style seasoned chicken.
Instead of frying it, I baked it in the oven to make it a bit healthier.
I used plum syrup instead of sugar—my own small way of starting the new year with better habits.
Once I actually started cooking, I realized how easy and fun it was.
It made me wonder why I hadn’t tried sooner.
If I’m honest, I think I used to make excuses.
After living alone for a long time, cooking for one always felt inefficient and exhausting.
It felt like too much effort for just one person.
Now, things feel different.
Living with my family again, sharing meals and sitting around the same table, I’ve come to appreciate how meaningful these moments are.
Cooking is no longer just a chore—it’s a way of creating time together.
Gratitude in 2025
1. From a one-person household to a family of four
In 2025, after nine years of living alone, I found myself in a household of four.
Living with my niece, in particular, means there’s never a dull moment.
The house feels warmer, fuller, and more alive.
2. A family trip after two years
For the first time in two years, our entire family traveled together.
We laughed, took photos, and turned ordinary moments into lasting memories.
Knowing we may not know when we’ll all gather again makes this time even more precious.
3. Returning to the U.S. after nine years
Returning to the U.S. after nine years meant relearning how to drive and re-adjusting to life all over again.
As a Third Culture Kid, adapting is both a challenge and a strength.
Thanks to the people around me, I feel like I’m slowly finding my footing again.
In the New Year
In 2026, I want to live a little healthier,
try cooking more new dishes,
and spend more meaningful time with my family.
It’s not just that my cooking has improved
my perspective on life has shifted, too.
